The Wards’ Trunch home

TRUNCH HALL Bradfield Road

A late 16th. Century, listed house with possible earlier parts. Goodrich (1939) says that Marmaduke Ward (the Parish Clerk) lived here before selling it to Thomas Bidwell who lived here in 1851 followed by his son Thomas from at least 1861 until after 1891. The Tithe map of 1839 however shows Thomas Bidwell as the owner-occupier but he is not on the 1841 census.

Evidence that Marmaduke’s father was George of Killamarsh:

1) Killamarsh baptism record for a Marmaduke Ward born at the right time near Chesterfield (above right)

2) No supporting records unearthed for a contemporary Marmaduke Ward born to Joseph

3) Marmaduke’s firstborn son was named George.  He had no sons named Joseph

4) The only one of Marmaduke’s seven children to marry was his younger son Marmaduke.  He too called his firstborn son George (again no Josephs)

5) The only record stating Marmaduke’s father was Joseph, his Cambridge alumni listing (above left), is shown in the below text to be highly inaccurate:

“P. 60 no. 33. The name of Marmaduke Mower is entered in the Register, but it seems probable that Marmaduke is a mistake for Edmund….

P. 60 no. 34. No Edmund Ward appears in the printed Graduati, but Marmaduke Ward appears as B.A. in 1732. It seems clear therefore that the keeper of the Register has transposed the Christian names of Mower and Ward. Marmaduke Ward (of St John's College, Cambridge) was ordained Deacon 20 May 1733 and licensed to the curacy of All Saints in Stamford by the Bishop of Lincoln. He was instituted Rector of Occold, Suffolk, 27 November 1715, ceding this in 1756. He was instituted Rector of Swaffteld, Norfolk, 31 May 1746, and Rector of Beeston-next-the- Sea, Norfolk, 9 February 1765, he held both until his death 6 February 1772. He was father of Marmaduke Ward of St John's (B.A. 1772), who was afterwards a Fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford (Foster, Alumni O.ronienses).” Source: ebooksread.com

The transcript above says Marmaduke was in a parish in 1715, (I think that should read 1735) “He was instituted Rector of Occold, Suffolk, 27 November 1715, ceding this in 1756.”
