This is a work in progress project to collate details of every instance of the surname Blanckley and all its variations.
I'm descended from the Hampshire Blanckley line, and have been researching my Blanckley ancestors in detail since 2015. The purpose of this one name study is to consolidate available data for all Blanckleys , Blankleys and other permutations of the name.

Blanckley branch in the spotlight
A clan of Blanckleys lived in the Leicestershire town of Melton Mowbray and the nearby villages of Ab Kettleby, Hoby and Rotherby until the 1800s.

Duel avoider
Henry Blanckley’s drunken decision to stand up to a bullying aristocrat in 1747 Portsmouth resulted in him being challenged to a duel he’d lose because he was a humble clerk.
His father pulled strings to get him posted overseas to Gibraltar, where he started a family, but the aristocratic bully, Augustus Hervey (pictured in this panel and on the button) found him there five years later and demanded he stood for that duel!

Henry Stanyford Blanckley (1785-1819) was a spy during Britain’s wars against Napoleon.
His derring-do biography has been pieced together by Professor Paul Thompson of Southeast Missouri State University.
